I came across this while reading (on the plane) Al-Imta` Wa-l-Mu'anasah by Abu Hayyan At-Tawhidi (d. 400 AH) who--to my distress--was so distressed at the end of his life that he burnt his books (only a few survived).

أنتَ للمال إذا أمسكته فاذا أنفقته فالمالُ لك
(You belong to the money, if you held it; but if you spend it, the money is yours)
