The Lebanese Parliament yesterday passed a new law about family violence, which basically stripped from the original law submitted by Lebanese civil society groups its key elements that aimed at the protection of women. The entire affair of changing the draft into the lousy one adopted has to be blamed on the two key groups: the Sunni and Shi`ite sectarian groups in parliament. It was a touching moment to see Hizbullah and Amal MPs uniting with Hariri March 14 MPs in opposing the original draft, and in changing it toward a caricature of the original. Most MPs were too ashamed to speak except that `Ali `Ammar (who has a hard time speaking without putting both of his feet in his mouth and who is a graduate of the street battles of the Amal Movement). `Ammar in a grotesque show of vulgarity mocked the law protecting women from domestic violence. The man who once called (using vulgar language) MPs to "cleans their mouths" before talking about Hizbullah should himself cleanse his mouth before talking about women and mocking their cause.
