A source on politics, war, the Middle East, Arabic poetry, and art.

My favorite columnist, ever, Joseph Samahah, has officially resigned from As-Safir newspaper. As-Safir printed a first page note to that effect. I personally knew that this was coming, but was hoping that As-Safir would write a much kinder and more generous note about Joseph. Joseph has charted an independent political line, in Lebanon and in the Arab world. His columns during the Hummus "Revolution" constituted a political line of courage and wisdom under the most oppressive conditions. His imprint was felt clearly in As-Safir, and it is a great loss for the paper and for its readers. But his readers will meet him soon, in a new project. He should talk about that when he wants. I am not at liberty.
