Al-Quds Al-`Arabi reports the case of a poor Iraqi calligrapher who now resides in Amman, Jordan. Apparently, after the assassination attempt on Saddam's son `Udayy in 1998, Saddam made a vow to have the entire Qur'an written in his (Saddam's) own blood. The calligrapher would receive the shipments of blood to his house, to use in the endeavor. His wife was horrified every time she opened the fridge, she said, she would see the blood of Saddam in a jar. The task was so delicate, the artist said, that he almost lost his eyesight. The task was completed, and the Qur'an (with Saddam's blood as ink) now sits in some museum in Iraq.
