Examples -- Salman Bin Fahd Al 'Oda, who appears regularly on MBC and 'Aed Al-Qarni. Both have offered dialogue with other sects, specifically the Shi'a, and the latter visited Iran.

While this may seem nothing to the outsider, but just go back a decade, and that would have been unthinkable.

It is interesting to note that the Salafi reformists started out more 'radical' than the state Salafis. They emerged at the time of the Buraydah riots (early 90s) and arose to critique the presence of American troops in Saudi and the 'permissiveness' of daily life in Saudi, with a special criticism of the state media (newspapers and television). Alot of their points may have triggered agreement with the state sanctioned Ulema, but they were far more quietest, and believed private naseeha (or advice) to be the correct manner to bring about change (based on their theological convictions).

At the height of the crisis, both leaders of this groups, Salam Bin Fahd Al''Ouda and Safer Al-Hawali were imprisoned. Both were released towards the end of the 90s, and since then both have changed. Salam Bin Fahd Al-'Ouda become accepted, got his own telvision show, and has openly called for things that were unthinkable in the past. It goes without saying that appearing on Saudi owned media, and calling for this message shows that they have returned to favour...why? I think alot of it goes down to the power politics within the House of Saud. More importantly keeping the religious youth in check, who have always been a threat to the stability of the kingdom.

It is also interesting to note that there are a whol group of liberal literati who are supported by the royal family, again I would think for similar reasons.

The House of Saud only care about one thing -- POWER!orbitznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785362.post-67901282949106021392008-03-25T21:41:00.000-07:002008-03-25T21:41:00.000-07:002008-03-25T21:41:00.000-07:00As'ad bhai: I disagree with your sentiment here. I...As'ad bhai: I disagree with your sentiment here. I don't think the Saudi King is so ideological at all that he'd be opposed to fashionable liberal interfaith dialogue craze; whatever keeps him in power and his masters in Washington happy. Strict Wahhabiyah has served the interests of the House of Saud very well over the past many decades. Maybe a "reformed Wahhabiyah" is what's needed for their rule/interests now -- although of course it will alienate all of those clerics that have greated legitimacy to the kingdom.junaidnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5785362.post-7450352993119775012008-03-25T21:25:00.000-07:002008-03-25T21:25:00.000-07:002008-03-25T21:25:00.000-07:00Midshit,Please come and play mohel on me.
